Investigating Representations of Indians in a 19th Century Textbook

Today we went on a textbook archive to do research for Indians. We read pages 18-21 and then used the search bar to find places in the textbook where the word "savage" was used. After looking it up the archive pointed out multiple spots in the text where this word was used. After reading over them, we were to answer a question discussing people views on Native Americans. We also learned what the definition of a savage is. A savage is described as a fierce, ferocious, cruel, untamed, uncivilized human being.

The question we were asked to answer in class today was:
If you were an American student reading this text as apart of your schoolwork, how would that shape the way you viewed Native Americans?

My Answer to the question:

If I were an American student reading this text, my views towards Indians would be somewhat shaped differently. After researching what a savage actually was, it is weird to think that the would refer to the Indians that way especially if they used them for trade. They took advantage of the Indians and when the Indians finally got tired of it the whites took over and made the public view them as savages. In the text, the used the word savage or savages mainly when they were talking about battles. It's like they want them to seem as brutal as possible so it doesn't make the white people look they are fighting without reason. I feel that the term is a awful word to describe any human being and that the only reason the called them that was so that people would view them negatively. However, that is not the case because most of us do not view them as that way. I would still view the Native American as mistreated human beings that were taken advantage of in the time period.

Newspaper Diary Entry

July 09, 1878

Disclaimer: This is for a class assignment in history class. I am portraying the wife of a wealthy man in 1878 in California.

     Dear Diary,
Today is just your average day in the state of California. However, instead of doing my normal kind of entry where I complain about my life and talk about myself, I thought that maybe I could talk about the life around me for a change. I guess the newspaper just inspired me because I realized that there are more interesting things in life besides my own. So I guess this shouldn't be a hard task considering my husband is the governor of the city. (which means I basically know everything) Lately the town has had a few run-ins with the indians again (what's new?) I guess I just do not understand all of the feud but lately there has just been so many casualties and I feel like it is time to put it to an end; but I doubt that will happen. My husband has even sent armed forces to protect the people of Sacramento. People nowadays just feel so helpless and worried about the indians especially with all of the fights going on. But that is just what happened this morning. Personally I find the news from last night more intriguing. Apparently 192 Chinese have come to California! And also they finally caught that filthy indian who killed that poor citizen and stole all of his money. How could someone be so savage? And while I'm on the subject of death I think its important to bring up how that woman was proved not guilty for the assassination of president Lincoln. Oh and how about that nine year old who killed his mother?! There is so much gossip around this town but I am glad the paper is here to tell us the facts and not the fiction. And with all of these tragedies happening, we deserve to know the truth!
Now that I have went on my little rant I think it is appropriate to start talking about something else thats maybe not so tragic. I guess since I am the governor's wifeI should talk about development of the state. I think we are doing well! The railroads have helped some but hasn't had as much impact as we hoped. Also, the paper just reminded me how the new skating rink is opening! How exciting! It's great to see how much we are growing; it makes me very exited for the future. Well, I guess I will go now. I believe I have some shopping to do. There are many sales going on that I might want to go to. I will talk to you tomorrow!

                                                                                                       Sincerely,
                                                                                                         Amelia

Newspaper Research

The newspaper that I did my research on was The Daily Los Angeles Herald. This newspaper was published on July 9, 1878. Majority of the front page of the newspaper was about indians. In the "Morning Telegram" section, there was an article entitled A Call for Arms. The article said that the governor had received a request from the people of Surprise Valley to provide armed forces to protect themselves against eh Indians. They Governor agreed to this and then ordered 250 stand of arms from the US armory in California. In another article called An Indian Fight, it says that "the boys" had just tough the indians at Willlow Springs. Along with Captain Sperry, 45 volunteers fought the indians all day and night. The casualties were 2 dead and 7-8 were wounded. In the last article that included indians entitled A Dispatch from Governor Chadwick, Major Kress went down to the river one morning on a steamer and passes a crossing at the upper end of Long Island. Kress saw no signs of Indians and so he returned. However, when he returned he cam across large numbers of hostile Indiands passing. Major Kress then decided to make an attack on the indians' entire camp and destroyed it.
The rest of the articles in the paper did not include much about Indians but the ones that did mostly involved attacks on one another. This shows that they people and the indians did not get along very well at this time and place.

Social Media vs Newspapers

Our use of social media is selective and intentional so that we tend to remain interested in only things we've already been interested in, where as newspapers expose readers to information on a broad range of topics. This can connect communities by providing information about what others may be interested in. It may raise questions I never thought to ask.

Newspaper Exhibits

1. What is a newspaper?

A newspaper is a set of large sheets of paper that have news stories info about local events, advertisements, etc.

2. When and where did newspapers first come into existence?

The first newspaper was made as early as the 16th century in Germany.

3. What were some of the very oldest newspaper in the United States?

Some of the oldest newspapers in United States were the Boston News-letter and The New- England Courant.

4. In a current newspaper what news is receiving attention and what are the "leading stories"?

In The Wall Street Journal the news was mainly nation wide concerning the leaders in our world. The top stories were "dell to Buy EMC for $67 Billion", "Libya's Masked Men Hunt Human Smugglers', and "Builders suffer Labor Pains".

5. What does it mean to be the "newspaper of record"? What US newspaper was first designated as the nation's newspaper of record in 1913? What other US paper can be considered a newspaper of record?

The newspaper of record refers to a publicly available newspaper that has been authorized by a government to publish public or legal notices. The New York Times was the Nation's first designated newspaper of record. Another Newspaper that could be considered a newspaper of record is The Washington Post.

6. How is looking at a newspaper different from our use of social media to stay connected/

Newspapers are very different from social media in good and bad ways. One of the reasons that looking at a newspaper is different from the use of social media is because on social media, the public gets to control what our news actually is. We are also to publicly share our ideas and thoughts about the news too. Newspapers do not allow us to do this because a group of people decide what news should be important to us. However, this can be a good thing because social also has many distractions and at times the news that you see on Twitter or Instagram can be considered irrelevant. The news in the Newspaper is almost always relevant and important in one way or another. But it is honestly just a preference. Some people may like having the option to "follow" whomever they want to receive specific news and updates while others may want something set and already played out for them.

Native American Research- Fashion Controversy

I did my research on Native American fashion controversy and to my surprise, there was much controversy on the topic. One of the most well known controversies happen to be from one of the most popular stores for young adults all around: Urban outfitters. On a recent article from the Daily Dot, the author of the post describes to us Urban outfitters new slogan: "We are all natives". This slogan is used as a marketing tactic for the store's now line featuring navajo themed clothing. The article states that the people of the Navajo Nation are suing the line because of their trademark violations due to the Indian Arts and Crafts Act which makes it illegal to sell items that make the buyers believed that it was made or produced by an actual member of the Navajo Nation. The article also suggests that if people want to buy authentic Navajo items do not buy it from Urban Outfitters buy it from authentic places because the goal is for them to be able to sell authentic pieces that promote their own culture and to stop letting retailers steal their culture by falsely making it their own. On another article on The Guardian, they explain the lawsuit against Urban Outfitters which states: " The fame or reputation of the Navajo name and marks is such that, when the defendant uses the 'Navajo' and 'Navaho' marks with its goods and services, a connection with the Navajo nation is falsely presumed." The article states that this is because Urban outfitters is producing things such as tribal flasks and underwear that the tribe considers to be "derogatory and scandalous". Also, Urban Outfitters spokesman says that the company has no plans to alter the line. " Like many other fashion trends and will continue to do so for many years to come." This however is true but if it is offensive to the actual tribe, then they should discontinue the line.
Another Native American Fashion controversy comes from Victoria's Secret. At their famous fashion show held every year one of their models was featured wearing animal print underwear with a traditional headdress. In native american culture headdresses are worn by chiefs or used to celebrate. On an article on National Turk, the headless was said to be " heavily criticized as a display of ignorance toward tribal culture an history. It was an abuse of Indian culture, from a nation that lacks history, culture, and values." The company did however apologize later, as did the model, and removed the outfit from the broadcast of the fashion show. Unlike Urban Outfitters, Victoria's Secret was very cooperative and understanding towards the issue.
I picked this topic because nowadays, most young people in America do not understand the things that we wear and do not question whether or not they could be offensive towards people. As someone whose wardrobe is half Urban Outfitters I now will pay more attention to the things I buy and how it may affect people's ideals and culture. We are so oblivious to the things that we say and do that sometimes we do mot realize how it may offend or disrespect the beliefs of those around us. I agree with most of these articles because the clothing brands are not paying attention to what the meaning of the things that they are selling actually are, they just care about the fashion aspect of it. This is not good because it causes issues in a community where we are supposed to respect those around us and not criticize.

1st Quarter Reflection

This quarter in US History has been outstanding for me because of the amount that I have been able to learn so far. So far this quarter we have learned about Slavery, the Civil War, The Constitution, reconstruction, black codes The West, film history, and much more. However, the most interesting and thought- provoking thing I have learned in history is the theme of empathy and what it means to empathize with someone. This is important because it will help me in many years to come because it made me understand the information I was learning and not just learn it. Also, research on film history was very interesting too. This is because I never really knew how much you could learn about a historical topic by simply watching a good movie. I had never seen 12 Years a Slave before but after watching it, I had a better idea of what slavery really was. I also understood the hatred that went along with slavery and the end of it because I got the chance to learn more about how the whites tried to still keep slavery alive without actually calling it slavery. I never knew this before and it was interesting to learn because I learned about how passionate the southerners were about slavery. Also, I have learned about progress in the United States. Our country has come so far and it is striking to see how much progress we made from hating the people who do not look the same as others to being able to love  and accept them. Another thing that we have learned this quarter that I found engaging was the West. At first, we all thought the West was what we stereotyped it to be, but in the end we realized that some stereotypes were real and some were not. Because of the assignments that we did that involved the West, I realized how much movies can change our perspectives on things because of the way they advertise them. Most of the things people learn these days come from things like movies because we are able to see and hear the things that were actually happening during that time period. Tying in history with film history was a great idea because it made us engaged and understand the things that we really didn't understand before.
I think that my progress has been good this quarter. I kept up with all of my assignments and wrote an essay that I was very proud of. I learned about things that I was very passionate about and because of that, I was more fascinated by the work that we did in class. I do think that I have grown as a thinker because with the topics I learned, I allowed my mind to let go and truly express what I felt about them. I feel that my strength has been being able to analyze movies because filming has aways fascinated me. I also think that I am more open to the value of history because in order to prevent these bad things from happening again, we must learn and understand both sides to the story to see the good and the bad about different times in our country's history. Our country has a very interesting history and because of this I would like to learn about the bad things that we have done that weaker our country.
In conclusion, I have had a great first quarter in history and I hope to be able to learn much more!
